We produce one video showing how different modalities can be affected by our sensor, SenZ. Having this in mind, we wanted to demostrate how common refereeing errors can be solved, simply by applying our sensor in different situations, that might happen during the games. In this case, we chose to focus in three specific modalities to show on our video, which were: basketball, volleyball and handball. This decision was made mainly due to the knowledge that some of our group elements had about this sports.

There are a few mistakes that referees don't signal but our sensor can detect it, which leads to a fairer play. In the video, we show some of these mistakes in certain sports.

Basketball

In basketball, these are some of the most common mistakes:

  • Unfair blocking – it's often hard to tell who caused the contact;
  • Incorrect foul calls – referees might call a foul when there was little or no contact;

  • Missed travelling violations – sometimes players take too many steps without dribbling, and it is not called;

  • Ignoring defensive 3-second violations – defenders may stay in the key for too long without being penalised.

Volleyball

In volleyball, these are some of the most common mistakes:

  • Missed rotational faults – referees may not notice when players are out of position during service;

  • Misjudging line calls – balls landing close to the lines can be called "in" or "out" incorrectly;

  • Wrong judgment on net touches – referees sometimes miss when a player touches the net during play;

  • Incorrect double contact calls – when a player touches the ball twice in a row but the referee does not see it;

  • Unclear lifting faults – some referees call a lift when the ball is played cleanly.

Handball

In handball, these are some of the most common mistakes:

  • Missing steps violations – not noticing when players take too many steps without dribbling;

  • Incorrect punishments – giving a 2-minute suspension when a warning (yellow card) would be enough;

  • Inconsistent 7-metre decisions – penalties are sometimes given or not given without clear reasons;

  • Ignoring passive play – referees may allow a team to keep the ball for too long without trying to score;

  • Unfair offensive fouls – referees sometimes call fouls on attackers when there was no contact or it was minimal.

Roller hockey

In roller hockey, these are some of the most common mistakes:

  • Failure to call stick fouls – referees sometimes miss when players use the stick dangerously or illegally;

  • Inconsistent advantage rule – stopping play even when the fouled team has a good chance to continue;

  • Unclear penalty decisions – giving penalties or power plays unfairly or inconsistently;

  • Ignoring goal area interference – not calling when players enter or block the goalkeeper's space illegally;

  • Late or missed time penalties – delays or mistakes in signalling temporary exclusions.

Athletics

In athletics, these are some of the most common mistakes:

  • False start confusion – athletes may be disqualified unfairly due to unclear or slow decisions;

  • Faulty lap counting (especially in long-distance races) – mistakes in the number of laps recorded;

  • Misjudging lane infringements – failing to see when runners step out of their lanes;

  • Improper measurement of throws or jumps – incorrect distances recorded due to human error;

  • Timing errors – issues with manual timing or problems with starting devices.

Final Commercial

After researching various real-life sports situations, we created a more detailed and informative commercial, which includes one example from which one of the sports. The result of this hard work is displayed at the end of this page.
